My teaching career started when I was 13 years old on my swim team when I began helping younger swimmers one-on-one after practices. My coach noticed, asked what I saw about their strokes, what I told them to do, and why I chose that method. Impressed by what he saw, he offered me a job coaching with him the following summer. During my coaching career I learned a lot about how to better communicate information to athletes and students of all ages and skill levels, as well as how effective peer-to-peer collaboration can be.
As a teacher, I hope to foster a positive learning environment and foster an atmosphere where collaboration is encouraged. Classroom learning should be centered on the students working together and having hands-on experiences through labs and projects so that they can connect the information they're learning to real world applications. Through lecture, students will learn necessary background information and natural laws, but in their labs they will observe, test, and provide evidence for the laws to check their validity.
Piaget believed speech was an integral part of the learning experience at all stages in life, so I would want to encourage students to collaborate and work on projects and assignments together. This can be implemented by having groups of 2-4 conduct labs together with specific roles to increase their accountability and by encouraging students to consult one another when they get stuck on homework problems after attempting them on their own. From my coaching experience and teaching experience, I have seen that sometimes the students can better explain some concepts to one another when someone isn't understanding the teacher's explanation. The best way to solidify knowledge in your own head, as well as identify holes in your own knowledge, is to try and explain it to someone else and answer any questions they may have about it.
